Benefits of HIV treatment

HIV or human immunodeficiency virus is the precursor to a dreaded condition called AIDS or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. ‘ When one is diagnosed with HIV, he/she may present with little or no symptoms during the early stages. ‘ These early symptoms could include muscle pains, body weakness, mouth sores, pharyngitis, and skin rashes among others. ‘ As the disease progresses, the person’s immune system will be affected leading to a variety of systemic illnesses which are life-threatening. ‘ Even though there is still no cure found for AIDS, people with HIV still opt to get treatment for the following reasons:

1. ‘ Alleviation of symptoms

The initial treatment plan of HIV is usually targeted to alleviate people from their suffering. ‘ Those who present symptoms may actually feel better if they get to be treated early.

2. Reduced risk of body system failure

HIV treatment, especially if given early, can help prevent and/or delay the progression of the disease and perhaps reduce one’s risk of developing diseases affecting the major organs and systems of the body including the heart, kidneys, and the lungs.

3. Prolonged and healthier life

By simply attending to the symptoms presented by HIV over its course, one will literally be healthier. ‘ With controlled symptoms, one may also live longer.

4. ‘ Reduced chance of spreading the infection

Studies have shown that HIV-infected people that undergo treatment are actually less likely to spread the infection to others. ‘ Early treatment of HIV could even reduce the spread of the virus up to 96% from the infected person to his/her partner.

Even though some people may lose hope knowing that there is no definite cure for HIV or AIDS, many of them still opt to undergo treatment. ‘ The basic goal of treatment is not necessarily to stop the disease but for one to have a longer and healthier life.
