The concept of birth control is not new to the world and various methods have been used for the same since earlier times. Earlier birth control methods were employed to prevent pregnancy. Ancient methods of birth control include withdrawal of penis to discharge the semen outside, vaginal suppositories and consumption of certain herbs that were considered as contraceptives. Recent development in medical science has given many new method of birth control to the humans. These include birth control pills, condoms, use of intrauterine devices, surgical sterilization and abstinence. Even today the primary aim of employing birth control methods is prevention of pregnancy, yet a few other advantages can also be derived from it. These include:

1.Prevention of pregnancy.
The primary aim of employing birth control methods is to prevent pregnancy. Depending on the kind of method used, birth control helps to prevent pregnancy in number of ways. Withdrawal and use of condoms prevent the entry of semen into the vagina, thus preventing fertilization. Other methods deter sperm from fertilizing the egg, killing of sperm, preventing ovulation etc. The efficiency and percentage of success of birth control through these methods depends upon the method used.

2.Prevents the occurrence of sexually transmitted diseases.
The main cause of spread of many diseases is having unsafe sex with numerous people. These are known as sexually transmitted diseases like AIDS. Use of male and female condoms prevent the exchange of body fluids between the sex partners and help to prevent transmission of any such disease from one partner to the other. Other diseases that can be prevented include gonorrhea, syphilis, herpes and genital warts.

3.Prevention from other fatal diseases.
Birth control pills although do not provide any protection against sexually transmitted diseases, they can aid in preventing certain kinds of cancer. Women consuming birth control pills for one year considerably lowers the risk for endometrial cancer. Intake of pills for three months or more helps to reduce the risk for ovarian cancer.

4.Help in easing cramps and prevents cyst formation.
Birth control pills are prescribed to women having severe menstrual cramps and ovarian cysts.

5.Help in regulating menstrual cycle.
Birth control pills also help in regulating a woman’s periods. These methods also help a woman to have short and light periods.

6.Help in treating acne.
Women with acne usually have unusually high levels of androgens secreted in their bodies. Hormones in birth control products suppress the production of these hormones and prevent the formation of acne.

So next time when you have any such problem like acne, or irregular periods, consult a trained doctor and get them prescribed. Never employ any method without consulting a doctor as it might prove to be very harmful.

  1. Using birth control pills will not involve a woman’s future fertility, although it may take 2 to 3 months or even more to get pregnant than a woman who did not take pills.
