Benefits of Ambulation
Ambulatory problems typically have a number of roots, from joint and muscle damage to paraplegia to hyperobesity. For every condition, there are specific devices used to help the patients while moving and walking, and vary depending on the patient’s condition. Typically, these devices help to relieve pain after knee surgery, not to mention that they improve one’s lifestyle.
1. Pain reduction
Assistive devices designed for moving around are normally used by most patients for a variety of reasons. For instance, the elderly use them for better mobility, whereas others need assistance due to an illness or injury. In most cases, these devices are found in hospital to help patients move around after intensive surgical procedures.
2. More stability
For balancing assistance and minimum walking, a cane or crutches may be adequate help. If your leg is broken, or you have less strength on one leg, crutches can help improve your mobility. Walkers and crutches often provide more stability for those who lack adequate strength to support their weight.
People often suffer from various damages after a stroke. These damages include visual problems, cognitive deficit, and muscle weakness. Rehabilitation through physical therapy is the only sure way of improving patient’s ability to walk.
4. Ambulation and spinal chord injury
According to recent statistics, most spinal chord impairments are incomplete. It is estimated that around 80 percent can walk again after intensive physical therapy. While most patients require the assistance of a walking device like leg braces, a cane or crutches, some are able to work on their own without assistance.
5. Ambulation and arthritis
Inflammation and swelling are common symptoms of arthritis or osteoporosis. This condition often worsens if left untreated and may cause inability to walk. People with arthritis may require the assistance of walking devices such as crunches.
Even functional walkers require the assistance of crutches at home. On the other hand, patients with a spinal injury can use a wheelchair for rehabilitation purposes. The wheelchair often acts as a back-up incase of illness or fatigue.
