Benefits of sebum

Sebum refers to the oil produced by the sebaceous glands in the skin. ‘ Some people produce so much of it that their skin becomes very oily while other people don’t have much of it making their skin very dry and even scaly. Regardless of the type of skin though, sebum actually provides various benefits. ‘ Contrary to most people’s idea about sebum, it is not only involved in acne or pimples. ‘ Sebum actually is essential for the skin because of the following benefits:

The oil produced by the sebaceous glands actually help protect the skin from various environmental hazards like dirt, dust, and bacteria. ‘ The presence of sebum in skin literally shields its outer layers from exposure to possible harmful substances. ‘ Without enough sebum, the skin will be more exposed to possible contact or contamination from bacteria or viruses.

2. ‘ Skin maintenance

The main function of sebum is keep the skin healthy and hydrated. ‘ Without this essential oil, the skin will become less healthy and more prone to various skin-related ailments. ‘ Enough sebum will also make the skin softer and younger-looking. ‘ In fact, the presence of adequate amounts of sebum will help prevent the signs of aging like the formation of wrinkles and fine lines.

Sebum contains various substances including Vitamin E which is a known anti-oxidant. ‘ With this particular Vitamin, sebum helps the skin from the damaging rays of the sun. ‘ When there is sebum, the skin becomes healthier, looks younger, and could possibly avoid the formation of dark spots.
