Benefits of Q10
Coenzyme Q10 is a natural oil soluble chemical substance that can be found in humans and is responsible for the promotion of energy generation in the form of adenosine triphosphate. CoQ10 is found everywhere in the body, because almost all of the body energy is generated in the ATP form. The antioxidant properties of CoQ10 made this compound a popular nutritional supplement.
Because the UV exposure is viewed as one of the main reasons for skin aging and furthermore, the CoQ10 levels decrease with progressing age, many skin care products nowadays are CoQ10 fortified. While a scientific correlation was never truly established, the though increased bioavailability facilitated through the topical application did result in fresher and maybe younger looking skin.
1. The obvious benefit of Q10 as ATP and energy generating device
It is believed that almost all of the generated energy in the body is adenosine triphosphate related, therefore Q10 is essential for proper functioning of that particular metabolic function.
2. Benefits of Q10 as an antioxidant
As a dietary supplement, Q10 is believed to act as an antioxidant because of the known electron transfer capabilities. While many of the applications of such a dietary supplement are still in research, it is recommended for use with aging and chronically ill people.
3. Coenzyme Q10 as treatment for heart patients
Supplementation of CoQ10 has shown some benefits in patients with heart problems, particularly congestive heart disease patients. While the medicinal community is still arguing about the efficacy of CoQ10, cardiac arrest patients have a higher survival rate when treated with CoQ10 in combination with a cooling of the body below the regular body temperature. This treatment is called active cooling and requires a body temperature just a few degrees below the normal.
4. Coenzyme Q10 can increase the lifespan
In several studies was proven on various animals and nematodes that CoQ10 supplementation with certain diets significantly increased the lifespan of test subjects. While human testing was not documented, scientists believe that the test results suggest a very probable positive outcome of such a test.
5. Coenzyme Q10 as a blood pressure aid
Clinical tests on humans have shown that patients suffering from hypertension experienced a significant lowering of both systolic and diastolic blood pressure levels, when supplemented with CoQ10.
Currently the cosmetic industry is going haywire with the CoQ10 products, putting it in everything, including soaps and toothpaste. How beneficial such an overkill can be remains to be seen. The more serious research with Q10 as dietary supplement seems promising, despite the almost strictly clinical applications it suggests. Cancer, Migraine, metabolic disorders and cardiovascular problems can be combated with help of CoQ10, but is it smart to pop the CoQ10 tablets like Chiclets? As of yet, there are no adverse reactions or serious side effects reported. The only problem is that CoQ10 is touted as a weight loss agent as well. If you are a serious sportsperson, like a weightlifter or body builder, that may be the case. Eating a box of ice cream and popping CoQ10 will not keep you slim.
