Benefits of Plums
A plum is a nutritious fruit that has smooth hard like seeds. It is either light green or light blue in color depending on the type of cultivar. It has a pleasant aroma with sweet taste but the seeds are not edible. It contains numerous nutritional benefits and some common types of plums include damson, cherry plum and blackthorn plum.
1. Low in calories
Delicious, succulent, fleshy plums contain no ”bad” saturated fats and are effective in weight loss since they are contain low calories. It also contains many health promoting properties such as vitamins and magnesium that improve function of the immune system.
2. Reduces constipation
Certain health compounds found in plum fruits, like sorbitol, isatin and diet ary fiber help to improve function of the digestive problems. This alleviates common digestion problems, including constipation and acid reflux.
3. Natural antioxidant
Fresh plums are also a great source of vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant that destroys free radicals responsible for cell damage. Regular intake of vitamin C boosts your immune system, and also provides protection against infectious agents.
4. Protection from certain type of cancers
Plums contain essential compounds, beta carotene and vitamin A. These compounds are beneficial for maintaining health of the skin and mucous membranes. In addition, vitamin A provide protection from cavity and lung cancer.
5. Reduces high blood pressure
Plums are also excellent sources of minerals such as iron, fluoride and potassium. Iron help in the production of red blood cells, and potassium help in controlling blood pressure and heart rate. In addition, plums contain vitamin K that alleviates symptoms of Alzheimer disease.
6. Prevents tumors
Recent research shows that plums prevent the development of tumors and cancerous cell in the body. Regular consumption of plums improves blood circulation, leading to healthy development of cells and tissues.
However, excessive consumption of plums is not advisable since it might act as a counter-productive.
