Many times we get the urge to sleep for a short time after lunch during the afternoon. However, almost all of us stop ourselves as we fear to put on weight or become lazier through regular napping during afternoons. But records show true facts that the highly successful and famous people like John F.Keneddy,Winston Churchill, Napoleon Bonaparte and many more had the regular habit to take short naps. They believed that a well timed nap can help them start fresh for the rest of the day and fight laziness and sleepiness.
Research also supports such belief. It shows that a small sleep in the afternoon does not cause any problems for sleep at night except for acute insomnia sufferers. Our biological clock certainly supports a short nap. Generally our biological clock keeps us awake for nearly 16 hours a day and sleep for eight hours. However, research shows that this biological clock is set to alert twice in 24 hours i.e.; once in around 2.00 am and another in around 2.00 pm. Hence there is no point fighting for not sleeping at afternoons. Many people in this world have divided their sleeps into two distinct sections that make them healthy and alert all day long.
Performance is hampered if a person is affected with fatigue. This can be dangerous in certain professions like for doctors and surgeons, drivers, police, soldiers etc. It can be a matter of life and death if you are not mentally alert in certain professions. Hence people should take the habit of brief napping very seriously. An experiment conducted between pilots at NASA showed that pilots allowed to take short naps showed a 34% higher performance level and alertness than those who did not.
Studies shows that sleep during nighttime makes you more alert and improves learning, This mean that whatever you study is ingrained inside your fresh mind after sleeping. New studies reveal that an afternoon nap of around 60 to 90 minutes is as effective as a nighttime sleep. Hence sleeping twice a day can make you twice more active. A nap as short as ten minutes can enhance your alertness and take away your sleepiness very effectively. Driving on roads while you feel drowsy and sleepy is extremely harmful. It can cost lives. Still drivers take risks. A full night’s sleep is essential before you drive. Similarly a short nap at afternoons is also the best way to start fresh. This way one reduces the risk to crashes and accidents.
