Kale, a vegetable from the Brassica family of is often talked about for its disease fighting abilities. It appears like cabbage and is quite versatile as it is used for the preparation of many recipes in many kinds of foods. The disease fighting power of kale can be compared to those of broccoli and Brussels sprouts as all of them belong to the same family. This green leafy vegetable is packed with vitamins and is quite beneficial for our health. Kale contains rich quantities of glucosinolates. These compounds activate the secretion of enzymes from the liver. These enzymes are capable of detoxifying chemicals that cause cancer in our body. Research and study has revealed that regular intake of kale in our diet helps to prevent fatal disease like cancer. The antioxidants present in kale help to protect genetic material i.e. the DNA, from the damage that ultimately causes cancer.

Kale contains two types of caroteinoids namely zeaxanthin and lutein. Intake of these helps to reduce the risk of macular degeneration which is related to age- and causes loss of vision in older people. Carotenoids protect the eyes by reducing the risk of formation of cataracts.

3.Promotes bone health.
Kale contains good quantities of minerals like calcium and vitamin K1. Calcium content helps in building bones and vitamin K1 helps to lower the rate of bone loss especially in post-menopausal women. Kale also helps to reduce bone problems like osteoporosis.

4.Beneficial for the heart.
Kale contains rich amounts of soluble fiber and antioxidant like vitamins A and C. these antioxidants prevent the oxidation of cholesterol that lead to formation of plaque in the arteries. Apart from all this kale is almost fat-free and thus very beneficial for the heart.

5.Provides the much required phytonutrients.
Phytonutrients, are natural compounds that help in the removal of free radicals from the body. These if left untreated can cause lot of damage to the cells. Phytonutrients send messages to the genes for increasing the secretion of enzymes in the body. These enzymes then fight off harmful carcinogens and prevent many diseases.
