Interval training is nothing new, it was practiced in the ancient times, when soldiers went to war, particularly the foot soldiers. They used to run for a mile, walk for a mile, then again run for a mile, until they arrived at the battlegrounds. The physical training that contains bursts of cardio or high intensity workout between resting or lower activity parts of the training is considered interval training, because there are intervals where you do not work out, rest, or do lower intensity stuff.

Many athletes that are involved in sports where running is involved practice interval training, for instance footballers and track and field runners. The benefits of interval training have been observed and documented by coaches and trainers and are nowadays a very common practice in professional sports. It is also the most recommended practice for people who use training and exercises to lose weight, interval training is providing better success rates than other forms of training.

1. Interval training for cardiovascular strength
In clinical studies conducted by reputable institutions has been observed that improvement of cardiovascular strength can be accomplished with raised efficacy if interval training systems are being employed.

2. Interval training as a build up training for stamina
Not a single athlete, no matter how talented, could run at once 10 kilometers or run as fast as forty miles an hour without build up training. While gradually increasing lengths and speed may also provide results, interval training seems to get the athlete to the goal faster with less trouble. Running 10 kilometers when you run for a minute then walk for a minute is an accomplishable task, even before you get into shape.

3. Interval training improves the aerobic capacity
Interval training requires bursts of energy, but provides ample time for muscles to recoup for the next burst. Continuous top energy workout reaches fatigue much faster. With interval training, the athlete can not only workout longer, but slowly builds up even more capacities for longer training sessions.

4. Interval training as a weight loss workout
Overweight and obese people cannot workout at cardio level without building up to the capability first. With interval training, such build ups are possible without too much risk. An overweight person cannot run over long distances, heart trouble and joints exertion are very possible. If between short bursts of running the overweight person walks to regain breath, the exercise becomes achievable.

Interval training is actually more common than other forms of training, because people seldom can keep exercising at cardio levels without a single break. Allowing your muscles to recover a bit, before you take up exercising again is not only better for your body, but also allows you to slowly build up your staying power. While every training program has the potential to lead to an injury, particularly with people who are just starting to get into shape, interval training lowers the chance significantly.
