Benefits of Asexual Reproduction

In simple terms asexual reproduction refers to reproduction involving one parent only, and in stricter scientific terms it maybe described as reproduction without the fusion of gametes. It is the primary form of reproduction among single-cell organisms such as bacteria. However, there are also some plant speciesÂ’ and fungi that reproduce asexually. Studies have shown that asexual reproduction also has some temporary benefits as compared to sexual reproduction. Let’s look at these benefits.

1.Mass reproduction:

In organisms that reproduce asexually, there is always mass reproduction when the environment is favorable. This is something commonly seen in single cell organisms, where the organisms mutate to create new cells and at a rapid rate. The advantage of this is that a large number of off-springs can be produced from just one cell and that too in a very short duration of time.

2.Better chance of survival:

Because these organisms are normally mass reproduced their chances of survival are better as compared to other organisms. Larger colonies of organisms make better use of available water and other resources to further propagate their species and survive better. Also, since the number of organisms are large their chances of survival are better when there are changes in the environment or when attacked by other organisms.

3.Saves energy:

Since these organisms do not require a partner or mate to reproduce, there is no need to spend energy or travel from its existent location to other places in search of a mate. This not only enables the organism to survive longer and better in its stable environment, it also enables faster and easier reproduction to propagate its species.

4.Retains its qualities:

In sexual reproduction, two gametes come together resulting in the loss of some features or qualities when more advantageous or stronger elements take over. This is avoided in asexual reproduction as it is just one cell that mutates to produce another. This ensures that the original qualities of a cell are replicated without the loss of any of its features or characters, both good and bad.

5.Reliable:

Asexual reproduction involves lesser number of steps and little or no involvement of varied elements or factors, making the process more fool-proof and more reliable. The reproduction of such organisms is more successful than organisms that reproduce sexually. For instance, when a plant reproduces through pollen transfer, the chances of the pollen reaching its correct destination and successfully completing the process is quite flimsy as compared to an organism that mutates itself to reproduce its off-spring.
6.No need for mate:

In asexual reproduction it is a single organism that propagates its species by mutating. The advantage is that there is no need for a partner or mate that belongs to the same species. This becomes especially useful when the organism is the single survivor in its species and needs to be propagated to make its species survive.

Thus, although sexual reproduction is the norm among the majority of the species in the animal and plant kingdom, asexual reproduction does have its share of benefits. Although considered as temporary benefits, they do help man in the research, study, and development of plant and animal species that are going extinct or are already extinct.
